Proper Care Of Cats

Cats bring joy to our lives. Being a responsible cat owner involves more than devotion and love, it also requires proper cat care.

What do cats need?

The following are the things cats needs for better growth and development:

Cat Food

* Kittens require about twice the energy per pound of body weight as a mature cat. It is recommended that kittens be fed three to four times a day and have fresh, clean water at all times. Moistened dry food or canned food left at room temperature can spoil if left out for several hours, so uneaten portions should be removed and discarded after one hour.

From seven months to one year, kittens should be fed twice a day.

An adult cat with normal activity requires only a maintenance diet. Because cats tend to be nibblers or *occasional eaters,* they should have access to their food throughout the day. And, have clean, fresh water at all times.

Cat Belongings

* Cats are not born knowing how to use a litter box and will need you to help train them. When your cat begins nosing around in the corners of your home or squatting, put her in the litter box. Gently scratch her front paws in the cat box filler. Should your cat have an accident, wipe it up with a paper towel, and place the towel in the litter box. Then place her in the litter box and scratch her front paws in the cat box filler to reinforce the idea. Do not punish your cat for having an accident. This won't help her to learn to use the litter box, it will only teach her not to eliminate in front of you.

* A scratching post is another thing that must be provided. Scratching is a natural behavior for cats. Scratching is a territorial instinct by which cats place their mark and establish their turf. Through scratching, cats mark their domains with more than just visible signs of claw marks. Cat's paws also have scent glands that leave their own special scent on their territory.

Cat Grooming

* The key ways humans can help with cat grooming are through brushing and nail cutting. A daily brushing of your cat's fur will help keep it shiny and tangle free. The brushing helps distribute the cat's natural oils which helps give its fur that shiny look as well as removing loose fur. Start brushing your cat when it is a small kitten so it gets used to it.

* Nail cutting is also very important and should be started as early as possible so that the cat tolerates the experience easily. Neglecting this important task causes the nails to curve and grow into the cat's paw pad which is very painful.

To cut your cat's nails take a paw and press under the pad so the nail comes out. Cut the nail tip and stay away from the pink vein *or quick* because it will bleed. It is easy to see this vein through the cat's translucent nails. Ask your vet for a demo if this is your first time cutting your cat's nails and you feel nervous.

If you remember these important points, they will definitely make your cats life, and yours the best. Your cat will thank you in many ways.
